Tuesday 6th October - walk ***** – Landguard, Shotley and Harwich –
Some sunny periods with a light breeze:).
My 73rd Birthday and what a brilliant day it was!
We had an adventure planned for today so gave the early morning walk a miss
today, I have recently sent some pics to the Harwich Foot Ferry for them to
use and they were kind enough to send use free tickets which we are going
to use today and the weather proved perfect, some cool clouds in the sky
with some sunshine, mild with light winds which made the time out on the
water very enjoyable! We were booked on the first ferry of the day picking
it up near Felixstowe dock view point at 10.30, no picnic today as we hoped
to get fish and chips out so just took our flask with a snack. Fruit bread
and a cuppa in bed to start then drove down to The Manor end to park for a
walk across Landguard Nature Reserve to pick up the ferry and got there
just in time to see a container ship leave its berth which by a group of
photographers setting up tripods, we thought the ferry might be full with
then but luckily they stayed in Felixstowe! The famous bright yellow ferry
came into view and landed on the beach in front of us as we climbed aboard,
both staff on the boat were very friendly and helpful as we made our way
across the very calm River Orwell, we sat in the front by ourselves as we
passed container ships and the two red lighthouse ships as we berthed at
Harwich. All the other passengers got off but we stayed aboard as we were
continuing over to Shotley Marina, a short distance across the River Stour.
We were dropped off on a pontoon right next to the marina lock gate and
walked to the row of seats on the green area with amazing views over to the
ships in Felixstowe dock which makes for some good pics as does the still
boat reflections in the marina. We had an hour here which gave us a enough
time for a cuppa and chocolate bar and walk a circuit of the marina before
being picked up again to be taken back to Harwich where this time we got
off! We then had two hours for a walk and to find a fish and chip shop so
we set off on the lovely prom towards Dovercourt. We passed the old fort
similar to the one at Languard, past the long jetty out into the Orwell
watching loads of yachts head out despite the light breeze. We found a loo
in the park and Mag found a fish and chip shop a short distance away on her
phone so headed there, I had plaice while Mag had scampi which did take
about 20 minutes to cook, when ready we took it to the seafront and ate it
near the statue of Queen Victoria and shared our chips with the gulls, in
fact I got a pic of them on the evening BBC Look East, the second pic that
Kate had used that day! We thought we were a little behind schedule so we
had a brisk walk back to Harwich pier making it in perfect time to see the
ferry approaching from Shotley. As we boarded we were surprised to see a
neighbour already onboard and had a nice chat as we headed back to
Felixstowe. Then the skipper came and told we were in luck as he had
spotted the steam paddle ship, The Waverley heading to Ipswich from Clacton
pier, it steamed right in front of us as we approached the container ships
making for some nice pics, we have seen the paddle ship loads lately!
Landing on the beach we thank the boat crew for an excellent day and walk
back along the lovely Landguard beach to the van, absolutely knackered
after having walked 7 miles! Home for a welcome cuppa with some yummy
birthday cake made by Mag before we have a brilliant video call from
Grandson Arlo who sent me a top card before we had a lovely evening with
the Granddaughter, Maeva! A top top day, great fun was had by all!
